What You Need To Know About Drywall Repair

Drywall has become the number one choice material in the Us for the construction of interior walls in homes as it is a time and labor saving alternative to traditional lath and plaster. Plaster was used as the most common form of interior wall finishing.

Drywall (commonly known as a sheetrock or plasterboard) is usually made of calcium sulfate dihydrate (gypsum), manufactured with or without additives, extruded between thick sheets of a facer, backer paper. The plaster is mixed with fiber (typically fiberglass,  paper, asbestos or a combination of these substances) to reduce mildew, flammability, and water absorption.

However, as cost-effective and convenient drywall is, it does have some drawbacks that need to be considered:

Vulnerability To Moisture And Mold

Drywall has a high vulnerability towards moisture due to materials that are used such as gypsum, paper, and organic additives and binders. Gypsum will soften with exposure to prolonged moisture and turn into a paste. In this case, all of the drywall will need to be replaced. Additionally, the paper facings and additives mixed with the gypsum core will become food for mold. The porosity of the board—introduced during manufacturing to reduce the weight of the board, lowering construction time and transportation costs—enables water to rapidly reach the core where mold can grow inside. But that’s not all. Drywall's paper facings are edible to termites, which can eat the paper if they are infesting a wall cavity that is covered with drywall. The paper backing material having been eaten will cause the painted surface to crumble to the touch. If enough of the paper has been eaten, the gypsum core can easily crack or crumble, causing the necessity of patching the damaged surface and repainting, without it and the drywall must be removed and replaced.

Wet drywall may also soften around the screws holding the drywall in place and the weight of the water may cause the drywall to sag and eventually collapse, requiring major drywall repair service. Water that enters a room from overhead may cause the ceiling drywall tape to separate from the ceiling. As a result, the waterlogged ceiling pieces will eventually collapse.
The good news is in many circumstances, especially when the drywall has been exposed to water or moisture for less than 48 hours, professional restoration experts can avoid the cost, inconvenience, and difficulty of removing and replacing the affected drywall. Rapid drying techniques can be applied to eliminate the elements required to support microbial activity while also restoring most or all of the drywall.

Temperature Fluctuations

Damages in sheetrock like cracks, peeling of paint, wet patches, etc., can also happen due to abnormal temperatures fluctuations and humidity levels inside and outside the building. The situation will have to be evaluated to assess the appropriate remedy.

Board Construction

In 2006 and 2007 a substantial amount of defective drywall was imported into the United States and incorporated into tens of thousands of homes. Complaints included foul odor, health effects, and corrosion of metal within the structure. This is caused by the emission of sulfurous gases. This issue was resolved in 2011 and now all drywall must be tested for volatile sulfur and any containing more than 10 PPM is unable to be sold in the US.  If your home was built in the years between 2006 and 2007 and you smell foul odors in your home or notice health defects you may need to have your drywall replaced.

Faulty Installation

A wall showing cracks, bulging and buckling is an indication of having complex issues which sometimes are caused by unskilled installation. Improper taping, the use of unsuitable materials, or insufficient fastening. All of these can be the cause of unsightly blemishes on drywall panels and ceilings.
